ALGO Asset Information
This page provides stable background for interpreting ReguMetric's ALGO intelligence. It separates ALGO from the Algorand blockchain and from the organizations that support its ecosystem, then explains consensus, staking participation, fees, assets and smart contracts in plain language.
The native digital asset of the Algorand blockchain, used for network fees and as stake in Pure Proof-of-Stake consensus.
A Layer-1 blockchain using Pure Proof of Stake and cryptographic random selection to reach consensus.
An organization supporting the Algorand ecosystem. It is distinct from the ALGO asset and the decentralized network itself.
ALGO ≠ Algorand ≠ Algorand Foundation
ALGO
The network's native digital asset. It is used in transactions, fees and consensus participation.
Algorand
The blockchain protocol and distributed network where ALGO, Algorand Standard Assets and applications operate.
Algorand Foundation
An ecosystem organization involved in development, community programs and treasury activities. Its actions should not automatically be treated as actions by the entire network.
What Is ALGO?
Native Asset
ALGO exists at the protocol level of Algorand rather than being an Algorand Standard Asset created later by an application or issuer.
Network Fees
ALGO pays transaction fees. Under normal uncongested conditions, the documented base minimum fee is 0.001 ALGO for a standard transaction.
Consensus Stake
Online accounts can register participation keys so their ALGO stake can take part in Algorand's consensus process.
History & Origins
Algorand's founding story traces the project to cryptographer and MIT professor Silvio Micali and work on a blockchain designed around security, scalability and decentralization. The Algorand white paper was published in 2017.
Micali and the early team developed the Pure Proof-of-Stake approach using cryptographic sortition and verifiable random functions.
The Algorand mainnet launched, moving the protocol from research and development into a live public network.
Algorand continues to evolve through protocol development, validators, application builders, ecosystem organizations and network participants.
ALGO Supply Basics
10 Billion Minted
Algorand's official asset information identifies 10 billion ALGO as the total minted and capped supply.
Circulating Supply
Circulating ALGO changes as remaining Foundation-held ALGO enters general circulation. ReguMetric therefore does not hard-code a live circulating-supply number here.
Foundation Transparency
The Algorand Foundation publishes transparency reports and wallet information for users who want current treasury and distribution context.
How Pure Proof of Stake Works
Pure Proof of Stake
Algorand calls its consensus design Pure Proof of Stake, or PPoS. Consensus voting power is tied to participating ALGO stake.
Cryptographic Sortition
Verifiable Random Functions are used like a private cryptographic lottery to select block proposers and voting committee members.
Participation Keys
Accounts participating in consensus register separate participation keys, reducing the need to expose spending keys during consensus activity.
Online Accounts
An account must be registered online with valid participation information to take part in consensus.
Finality
Algorand's Byzantine Agreement design is intended to finalize an agreed block without relying on multiple confirmation blocks or routine chain reorganizations.
Staking Rewards
Current protocol versions allow eligible consensus participants to receive staking rewards. This is different from Algorand's earlier participation-reward and governance-reward systems.
Assets, Smart Contracts & Applications
Algorand Standard Assets
Tokens created on Algorand are commonly called ASAs. Asset functionality is built into the base protocol rather than requiring every token issuer to deploy a token contract.
Smart Contracts
Algorand applications can use smart-contract programs to implement rules and application logic on the network.
Atomic Transactions
Algorand supports transaction grouping so multiple transactions can be treated as one atomic operation: either the group succeeds together or it does not.
What ALGO Is Used For
Transaction Fees
ALGO is used to pay the fees required for network transactions and application calls.
Consensus Participation
ALGO held by registered online accounts provides stake weight in Pure Proof-of-Stake consensus.
Minimum Balance Requirements
Algorand accounts have minimum-balance requirements that can increase when the account creates or opts into assets, applications or other onchain state.
Who Does What?
Algorand Network
The distributed blockchain system that processes transactions and reaches agreement through its consensus protocol.
Consensus Participants
Online participating accounts and nodes help propose and vote on blocks using registered participation keys.
Algorand Foundation
Supports ecosystem development and publishes treasury/transparency information. It is not the same thing as the blockchain itself.
Protocol Developers
Develop and maintain software and protocol technology used in the Algorand ecosystem.
Application Developers
Build wallets, applications, assets, smart contracts and infrastructure that use the network.
Users
Hold and transfer assets, use applications and choose the wallets, services and software through which they interact with Algorand.
Terms New Investors Will See
PPoS
Pure Proof of Stake, Algorand's consensus mechanism.
VRF
Verifiable Random Function, cryptography used in Algorand's random consensus-selection process.
ASA
Algorand Standard Asset, a token or digital asset created using Algorand's protocol-level asset system.
Participation Key
A key registered for consensus participation so the account's spending key does not need to perform consensus duties.
Round
Algorand's progression of consensus and block creation is commonly described in rounds.
microAlgo
One millionth of an ALGO. Network fees and protocol values are often expressed in microAlgos.

Why This Background Matters
A Foundation announcement, an application built on Algorand, a protocol upgrade and a change in ALGO market activity are different kinds of evidence. Understanding the difference helps users interpret ReguMetric's regulatory, institutional, exchange, blockchain, news and market intelligence without treating every ecosystem event as if it came from the network itself.
