HBAR Asset Information

Understand HBAR, Hedera and hashgraph.

This page provides stable background for interpreting ReguMetric's HBAR intelligence. It separates the HBAR coin from the Hedera public network, its hashgraph consensus technology, and the organizations responsible for network governance and ecosystem development.

H
The Asset
HBAR

The native cryptocurrency of Hedera, used for network fees, transfers and proof-of-stake network security.

The Network
Hedera

An open-source public distributed ledger using hashgraph consensus rather than a conventional linear blockchain.

Governance
Hedera Council

A council of organizations that governs key network matters such as software changes, pricing and treasury policy.

What Is HBAR?

Native Cryptocurrency

HBAR is the protocol coin of Hedera. It transfers value and pays for use of Hedera network services.

Network Fuel

HBAR pays transaction fees for activities such as token transfers, smart-contract execution and data-related network services.

Network Security

Hedera uses a coin-weighted proof-of-stake model. HBAR stake contributes to the voting weight used by nodes during consensus.

How Hedera Is Different

Hashgraph

Hedera uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm. Instead of producing a traditional linear chain of blocks, nodes build a graph of events as information spreads through the network.

Gossip About Gossip

Nodes share transactions plus information about how they learned that information. This creates a shared history that nodes can use to calculate consensus.

Virtual Voting

Nodes can calculate how other nodes would vote from the shared hashgraph rather than sending a separate vote for every decision.

Consensus Timestamps

Transactions receive consensus timestamps based on when the network collectively observed them, supporting verifiable ordering.

No Proof-of-Work Mining

Hedera does not depend on competitive proof-of-work mining. Consensus influence is weighted using HBAR stake.

aBFT Security

Hashgraph is designed for asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance, a strong form of fault tolerance for distributed systems.

Hedera Governance

Hedera Council

Hedera uses a council-based governance model with organizations from different industries and geographic regions participating in major network decisions.

Equal Governance Votes

Council members have equal voting rights on governance matters. Most memberships are term-limited to reduce permanent concentration of governance authority.

Governance vs. Consensus

Governance decides policies and network direction. Consensus is the technical process nodes use to agree on transaction order and ledger state. They are related but not the same thing.

Hedera's current public mainnet is open for users and developers, while consensus-node participation remains permissioned to approved operators. Hedera describes a longer-term path toward more open node participation.

Hedera Network Services

Hedera Token Service

Native network functionality for creating, managing and transferring fungible and non-fungible tokens without requiring every token feature to be built as a separate smart contract.

Smart Contract Service

Supports Solidity-based smart contracts, allowing developers familiar with Ethereum tooling to build programmable applications on Hedera.

Consensus Service

Provides decentralized ordering and timestamps for application messages and events, functioning like a verifiable public notary for data ordering.

HBAR Supply & Staking

Maximum Supply

HBAR has a fixed maximum supply of 50 billion HBAR. Not all HBAR entered circulation at network launch.

Staking

HBAR holders can stake or proxy stake their HBAR to nodes, contributing to the network's proof-of-stake security without transferring ownership of their tokens to the node.

Current Circulation

Circulating supply and treasury distributions change over time. ReguMetric therefore treats current supply figures as live data rather than permanently hard-coding them on this educational page.

History & Development

2015

Dr. Leemon Baird developed the hashgraph distributed-consensus algorithm.

2018

Hedera's public-network project and governance approach were introduced, with Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon among its co-founders.

2019

Hedera mainnet became publicly accessible and HBAR began its role as the network's native cryptocurrency.

2022

Hedera's hashgraph technology and network code moved to an open-source model under the Apache 2.0 license.

2024

Hedera contributed its codebase to Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust, where the open-source technology is developed as the Hiero project.

2025

Hedera's ecosystem branding evolved, including the transition of the HBAR Foundation name to Hedera Foundation and the Governing Council branding to Hedera Council.

What Hedera Can Be Used For

Tokenization

Organizations and developers can issue and manage digital representations of assets using Hedera's native token capabilities and smart contracts.

Payments

HBAR and other Hedera-based assets can be transferred through applications that use the network's low-fee transaction infrastructure.

Supply Chain

Consensus timestamps and tokenization can support auditable records for goods, events, ownership and provenance.

DeFi

Developers can build decentralized financial applications using smart contracts and Hedera-native assets.

Data Integrity

Consensus Service can establish verifiable ordering and timestamps for events without requiring the underlying private data itself to be stored on the public ledger.

Enterprise Applications

Hedera's governance, predictable fee model and network services are designed to support both public applications and institutional use cases.

Terms New Investors Will See

Hashgraph

The data structure and consensus algorithm Hedera uses to reach agreement on transactions.

Gossip About Gossip

The process of sharing transaction information together with the history of how that information traveled between nodes.

Virtual Voting

A method that lets nodes calculate consensus from the shared hashgraph without transmitting separate voting messages.

aBFT

Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance: a security property designed to allow consensus despite faulty or malicious participants and unpredictable message delays.

Proxy Staking

Associating HBAR with a consensus node to contribute stake weight while the holder keeps control of the HBAR.

Hiero

The open-source distributed-ledger technology project under Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust that includes technology contributed from Hedera.

Why This Background Matters

HBAR, Hedera, hashgraph and the Hedera Council describe different parts of the ecosystem. Understanding those distinctions helps users interpret ReguMetric's network, institutional, regulatory and market evidence without treating a development involving one part of the ecosystem as automatically equivalent to a change in every other part.
